Since March of 2007 I have been working to build a network that could cushion the blow when consulting contracts expire. At that time, I was on the final leg of a contract with Unilever in Trumbull, CT. I knew that I had to grow my contacts in the industry quickly so I could find additional work in the near future. Once I discovered how much it fit my personality, I really started to get serious about it.

I started with LinkedIn and Plaxo to support my growing address book and coordination with follow-up on contacts that were of immediate value or to whom I thought I had some value to offer. I then started a bit of expanding my sites to afford me wider exposure and inbound invitations from others to avoid having to stop connecting to others when I reached the network limitations.

Since then, I have gone on to work in other networks covering geographies outside my normal. Ecademy and Viadeo are the two primary networks I used for that purpose. Both have been great adjuncts to my efforts but, still something was missing. How is it that one can properly and efficiently both deliver and extract value, monetary or otherwise, from the multitude of connections. For that I turned to some of the following authors and promoters of the Relationship Economy.

I first heard about the “Relationship Economy” from Jay Deragon. At the time, I was only aware of his one blog A Relationship Economy. He repeatedly had thought provoking commentary on contemporary issues and incidents that struck a cord with me. Often short and challenging, his questions always urges one to consider the norm and how it may or may be normal for much longer. The internet and rapid communication is transitioning power to people to create grass-roots demand for products and services as they wish them to be. Not unlike the mid-fifties transition from a salesman approach to the marketing approach, the new relationship economy is on track to derail the corporate freight train that pushes products primarily driven by inertia. Once they start initiate and offering, they are loath to change course based on a few poor customer feedback incidents.

I also began following LinkedIn giants in industries dear to my heart; recruiting. To date, I have only had one recruiter/placement agency for who I had any trust and reciprocated with any sense of loyalty. Vincent Wright was using much of the tenants of the Relationship Economy espoused by Jay Deragon. I was quite encouraged by what I saw and more importantly by what I was able to read and listen to on podcasts about Vincent and his method of establishing reciprocal relationships assisting both employers and employees to find their best matches. Finally, a recruiter who was not just out to “sell meat” at the best margin for his sake. Vincent has an entire roster of networking groups with similar credo. That being said, most do not have the community wide recognition like My Linkedin Power Forum . Visiting and joining his group has been quite enlightening from a new millennium employment point of view.

Also of worthy note is the Adam J. Kovitz, CEO, Editor-in-Chief of The National Networker . His staff of dedicated authors and forward thinkers constantly produce networking and relationship capital related articles designed to illicit thought and changes in attitude and values as they relate to businesses of the future and the present.

These are just a few of the resources and people who have created them who have inspired me to research further into the Relationship Economy, RC (Relationship Capital) and how they relate to how I can add more value to every relationship and deliverable I commit to in my business and my personal life.

In preparation for the management course exam on Tuesday the 15th, I started my quick review of the course materials for chapters 1 - 5. Using a the EyeQ speed reading course CD, I have increased my reading speed and was able to skim the 5 chapters in about 1.5 hrs and feel comfortable that it has refreshed me enough to move on. I have 14 more chapters in the next two days to review.

Secondly, I started the Marketing course via the reading and markup of the first 2 chapters. It was a very interesting read as it covers much of the high profile corps and their marketing plans both successful and less successful.

These materials also started me thinking of turning my current methods of making a living into separate SBUs, collating them and then migrating from the more active income streams to the more passive income streams. This, in theory, will migrate my family’s life more toward the “New Rich” lifestyle extolled by Timothy Ferris in his book “The Four Hour Work Week”.

I have completed the Management 360 course materials and the last progress test. I have also requested that my final exam be sent to Allegany College proctors in preparation for the taking the exam on 4/15/08. That will be my second course completed in the month of April.

The study schedule is quite tight this month as I plan to complete 2 more courses this month. My method of studying is really working well so far. There are more items to test but, I will start from here forward to add links to the materials that have contributed to building this system and how I have instituted the plan. I hope this will help others who have much in the way of materials to cover in a short period of time and testing or certification exams as their endpoint.

The human brain is truly amazing! I hope to also add many of the links and authors who are publishing their finding and recommendations to expand your mind and capabilities toward the edge of belief.

Please feel free to comment on what you have learned and where you have learned it so that others reading this blog can benefit as well.

Well, I got home from taking my test and felt almost ill. I was very worried about my performance on the statistics test. I had to make point calculation on the final three questions as I was running out of time on the proctored exam. I selected the one with only40 or calculations to populate the rolling quarterly moving average. It took a good bit to get it done but, apparently I selected the correct one to focus on as I scored 80% on the exam and 86% on the course. I am very pleased and relieved at this point.

My intent for myself is to become better able to exclude these thoughts of doubts and insecurities going into my exams. I will be registering for another exam almost weekly on my current schedule so I will have plenty of opportunity to practice.

So, with that intent, I will be increasing my mental preparation such as visualizing and my personal hypnosis to support my belief in myself and my study skills. I know I have put in the time necessary to pass my tests, I will be putting the less positive thoughts in the back of my mind and giving my best by believing in my best.
